Get to know Un Chi Kuan, Senior Consultant with our Montreal Forensics team
Many people think the field of accounting can be straightforward. For Un Chi Kuan, her day-to-day work in Forensics is anything but that. Learn why Un Chi decided to work in Forensics, why she finds the work so rewarding, and the trends she’s seeing in the field.
What drew you to Forensics?
From a young age, I was interested in solving things and seeing how things work — which might have led to a bit of destruction but helped develop my thought process. While studying to become a CPA, I learned there was a field that specialized in investigations and it piqued my interest. The field of forensic accounting involves many elements that I have an affinity for, such as investigation, law, and psychology.
What elements of Forensics do you find more rewarding?
The field of forensic accounting is multi-faceted, and no two mandates are ever the same, as there are a lot of different components involved. This element of Forensics keeps me interested, however, being able to provide answers is what I consider the most rewarding. When we first get involved in an engagement, there are usually many questions without ready answers, and a lot, or very little, information that needs to be made sense of. In working meticulously through the information we have or by uncovering new pieces of the puzzle, we can eventually piece together parts of the larger picture and provide answers to questions that arose at the beginning and during the mandate.
What trends are you currently seeing during your mandates for clients?
The types of mandates that we are currently seeing are a mixture of old and new. The speed at which technology has progressed makes it look like there are a lot of new types of fraud occurring by adding new layers of complexities. However, when distilled, the underlying fraud is often the same at its core, just orchestrated in a different manner. As a result of these technological advances, companies are looking for better fraud management, in the form of fraud risk assessments and fraud awareness programs. Meanwhile, with the assistance from our Digital Forensic specialists, litigation support continues to centre around employee theft, shareholder disputes, conflict resolutions and estate matters.
