How did your path in accounting begin?
I entered my first year at Thompson Rivers University around the time my parents opened up a business franchise in Kamloops. I was planning to enrol in a science major, but as I became more involved in the accounting functions we used to do at that franchise, I decided I really liked accounting.
So after only a year in science I switched my major, I did my BBA and majored in accounting. Then I started the whole articling process at one of the big four firms in 2014, and my career got rolling from there.
What is your role at MNP?
I am a member of MNP’s Assurance and Accounting team in Kamloops. I consider myself a problem solver who helps small- to medium-sized businesses, including private businesses, resolve their assurance and tax challenges and achieve success.
I work with business every day to help them with just about any financial requirement they have. I implement and evaluate controls for success and advise clients on a wide range of bookkeeping and accounting matters. I also prepare and review Notice to Reader statements, reviews, audits, and a variety of tax filings. I’ve even had clients ask me about staffing issues, preparing for retirement, how to submit reports to the CRA, a variety of requests come my way.
What’s the number one piece of advice you give to clients?
The number one piece of advice I would give to a client is always to have a strong understanding of their financial statements — this is a true picture of what’s happening with an entity. Often all it takes is looking at the numbers to identify major issues that are happening, or what needs to be addressed in order to have more success.
I’ve also noticed that people who are well connected and have different resources are typically the ones who see more success. They’re well established in the community. What’s nice about a tight-knit community like Kamloops is that people are supportive of one another.
What keeps you motivated inside and outside of work?
Knowing I’ve helped clients is what keeps me motivated, it’s what I enjoy most about what I do. I know many business owners who struggle with the financing or accounting side. Just sitting down with them, helping them through their questions, seeing what we can do to make their business better, is what I love.
It's good to see at the end of the year, they’ve made a lot of income and they’re doing well. When we take part in helping them reach that success, that’s a great feeling.
Outside of work, I’m very passionate about helping others; I’m a member of the Kamloops Sikh Cultural Society and I try to participate in various events in the community. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family, taking trips with my wife.
Having a healthy work life balance is very important to me, and with MNP I can have the flexibly to make it happen.
