What is your experience in forensics and litigation support?
I am a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Business Valuator, Certified Fraud Examiner, and Certified in Financial Forensics.
My experience includes conducting investigations into potential corruption (i.e., conflicts of interest and bribery) and fraud schemes that result in the misappropriation of assets. I have also managed litigation engagements that involve commercial litigation, shareholder disputes, insurance, personal injury, and family law.
In additional to investigations and litigation support, I have helped clients quantify losses resulting from incidents such as wildfires for insurance purposes, and valuation engagements. I have successfully managed complex engagements that involve other sub-services, such as computer / digital forensics, analytics, intelligence, legal review teams, and/or offshore resources.
What types of clients need forensic services?
While I have worked with clients from a variety of industries — including mining, real estate, construction, financial institutions, manufacturing, and the public sector — every industry is susceptible to fraud and/or litigation.
Each client has their own unique challenges. These are examples of common scenarios that require the support of a forensic accountant:
- Assisting regulators with the investigation of regulated entities and compliance reviews,
- Supporting a company’s board of directors to investigate concerns with the executives of a publicly traded company,
- Assisting a company’s internal investigation through a fact-finding exercise,
- Providing an independent opinion to the court as an expert witness for investigations or litigation matters, and
- Quantifying losses resulting from a business interruption for insurance purposes.
What kind of approach do you take with clients seeking forensic services?
It’s important to understand that a client has experienced a significant event in cases involving forensic services. I take a personalized approach towards each of my clients starting with the initial meeting, and actively listen to their concerns and discuss what the next best steps look like. I communicate regularly with my clients and will never compromise on quality.
After the initial meeting, I develop a tailored approach to address the client’s concerns. I prepare a report if requested or required and typically present key observations to stakeholders. This is all conducted with an awareness of any sensitivities that may be involved.
How do you support clients?
It is important to understand our clients’ objectives at the beginning of each engagement. Most clients are looking to recover from potential losses through their insurance policies, civil litigation, and/or criminal charges. Each of these options requires a different approach.
I love to help our clients address their concerns and provide sound analysis and support to help them achieve their objectives. We find that many clients will ask for our help to identify weak controls and provide recommendations for improvement to ultimately help reduce the risk of the reoccurrence of unwanted events.
What do you do outside of work?
I enjoy staying active by playing indoor and beach volleyball, skiing, running, hiking, and cycling. I also like to travel and explore new restaurants and bars around the city.
