Michael Shumate, CPA, JD, LL.M. is a Partner with MNP’s Toronto office. Overseeing the region’s U.S. corporate tax practice, Michael works with his team to provide his clients with in-depth expertise and analyses of U.S. tax matters from a Canadian perspective. With more than 20 years of diversified experience, Michael specializes in developing and implementing tax-advantaged structures for
public, private and governmental enterprises.

With his extensive background in law, Michael has successfully defended clients from federal, state and municipal audit assessments and has represented clients in various appeals hearings; resulting in substantial tax savings. Michael also assists with acquisitions of U.S.-based assets from a buyer or seller perspective and can help businesses structure their U.S. investments, from the sales and distribution capabilities of private companies to large investments in production facilities.

Michael has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from Western Kentucky University; a JD from the University of Louisville, Brandeis School of Law; and an LL.M. from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. He is an Attorney at Law as well as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of the American Bar Association and the American Association of Attorney-CPAs. Committed to his profession, Michael has spoken and published on a broad range of U.S. tax issues for various organizations.
